Edinburgh Women’s Aid – Refuge Service
The Edinburgh Women’s Aid Refuge Service provides advice, information and where necessary refuge accommodation to women and any accompanying children who have experienced domestic abuse.
The service can provide safe refuge for up to 29 women and their children. The accommodation varies from houses shared with two or three other women, to individual flats for those who need additional support. All locations of refuge accommodation are confidential and staff aim to help you keep as safe as possible. If you feel that you need to leave the Edinburgh area for your own safety, staff can also help you to access refuge accommodation in other areas of the UK.
Once you are in a refuge, staff will be there to help you settle in to the accommodation and start planning for the future. Your decisions will always be respected, and the aim is always to help you find ways to be safe – and feel safe.
When women and their children have stayed in the refuge accommodation they are usually re-housed within six to nine months. As it can be a difficult time, staff help them settle into their new lives by offering emotional support and advice on practical and financial matters.
