Care and Repair

Care and Repair provide practical services to help people repair, improve or adapt their homes. A range of help is available people aged 60 or over, or people who are disabled, so that they may remain in their own homes in comfort and independence for as long as possible.

The Handy person service is for small DIY and technical jobs in the home. It is free and you will only pay for materials used. Tasks can include things like:

  • Changing lightbulbs plug or fuses
  • Fitting carbon monoxide detectors and batteries
  • Hanging pictures and photographs
  • Fitting curtain rails and hanging/changing curtains
  • Set up of TV / DVD / Freeview / Digital Box
  • Setting up printers
  • Uploading Photos from a camera
  • Setting up telephones/voicemails


Small Repairs are available for a charge, and include small jobs around the home. Typical jobs include:

  • Fitting handles or handrails, or bath or shower aids
  • Fitting draught excluders
  • Fitting locks and security items
  • Small window  or door repairs


Home Improvement / Adaptations are for large or small changes to your home to make life easier for you. This can include:

  • Providing advice about the type of repair, improvement or adaptation your home needs
  • Advising whether you may be able to receive a grant for the work, and help for you to apply
  • Helping you to organise building work and dealing with architects and builders on your behalf


The Home from the Hospital service helps with small repairs to make it easier for people following a stay in hospital. Care and Repair can also respond quickly if you need changes made whilst you are in hospital. Examples of jobs include:

  • Install a keysafe to make it easy for family and/or carers to visit you
  • Fit door locks
  • Install a wireless door bell if your hearing is impaired
  • Secure cables and tack down loose carpets to prevent you from tripping
  • Ease stiff doors
  • Mend loose kitchen cupboard doors
