Thistle Foundation

The Thistle Foundation support people with disabilities and long term health conditions such as mental health difficulties. Thistle offers a range of services to  help people cope and have control over their own lives.

 

Health and Wellbeing

Lifestyle management courses are run regularly, and can help people learn how to cope with difficult life situations. There are different types of course, including courses for veterans, exercise based courses, and nutrition focussed courses.  The courses take place at local community venues, including Thistle Foundation.

Mindfulness courses have been designed to help people cope with the stresses of everyday life. Courses run for eight weeks.  By learning to manage stress, pain, illness and health problems, mindfulness can help increase your self confidence, self esteem, coping and control.

Guided walks take place regularly in the local area. These walks are a great way to get out into the fresh air, meet new people and enjoy on some gentle exercise. Walks are led by Thistle volunteers and they start in the Hub at Wighton House. 

The Thistles Gym has accessible equipment and can offer supervised sessions. There are also a range of exercise classes. Gym members can access a range of free classes including Tai Chi and gentle exercises.

 

Supported Living 

Thistle provide individual support in people’s homes, to get out and about and to support the life you want to lead with your own tailored support plan. This service is available throughout the Central Belt. Self referrals are accepted as well as referrals from your Local Authority.

Thistle’s Family Forum is for family members, friends and advocates of people supported by Thistle. It is an independently run service, providing support and information about Thistle and the wider developments in social care.

Young People 

 

InterAct is a project for school leavers, working across three special schools in Edinburgh and Midlothian and hosted by the Thistle Foundation.

 

InterAct aims to relieve young people and their families of the anxiety of leaving school, by initiating productive conversations about the future and by starting to make exciting plans within a safe and supportive environment.
