Making an appointment

To make an appointment please call 0131 529 7438.

If you are unable to come to the TAP offices because of illness, disability or other reason , staff can arrange to visit you at home.

Staff can arrange to visit you in hospital or in prison if you need housing advice and help before discharge or release date.

Please tell TAP if you have any special requirements, which could be:

  • an interview by a staff member of the same sex
  • interpretation and translation services
  • help to fill in forms if necessary
  • facilities for the hard of hearing or visually impaired
  • bringing a friend or advisor to your appointment

TAP provide telephone access to an interpretation service for those whose first language is not English. We also endeavour to have an interpreter present at pre-arranged appointments.

Crisis and Emergencies

If you have nowhere to stay tonight, TAP will arrange an emergency interview for you with a duty officer. Please note that, at busy times you may have to wait to be interviewed.

If you become homeless after office hours, you can contact the Council’s Out of Hours Service on Freephone 0800 032 5968.#

Edinburgh Access Practice

The Access Practice aims to offer services to anyone who is experiencing difficulty in accessing Primary Healthcare, whose accommodation arrangements are uncertain, and who may have additional support needs, regardless of gender, ethnicity or culture, religion or sexual orientation.  If you become a patient of Edinburgh Access Practice, you will be able to access the following health professionals and services:

GP Surgeries – surgeries are partially open access, meaning you can see a GP without the need to make an appointment.

Practice Nurse – You do not always need an appointment to see a Practice Nurse, as they are available during and out-with the GP surgery times. You can speak to a Practice Nurse for advice by calling the practice on 240 2810 or by calling in person to either of the practice premises at Cowgate and The Access Point. If the Practice Nurse is unable to see you, staff can make an appointment for you.

Referral to Secondary Care Services – Like all Medical Practices, Access Practice GPs can refer you for specialist care if that is necessary.

Midwife and Health Visitor – Antenatal care and support during pregnancy.

Practice Mental Health Team – You can be referred to this service by Access Practice GPs. This service offers support from CPNs, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker and Voluntary Agency colleagues to assist you if you are experiencing difficulties with alcohol, drugs, other addictive substances, as well as mental and physical health problems and liaison with other mental health professionals as appropriate.

Interpreter & Translation Services – Staff can provide telephone access to a translator service for those whose first language is not English. In some cases, an interpreter can be arranged to accompany you to your appointment.

Edinburgh Access Practice works in partnership with Housing and Social Care services at The Access Point (17 Leith Street, Edinburgh) and also at another city centre location in the Cowgate Clinic, 20 Cowgate, Edinburgh.

Timetables for accessing GP surgeries are available on request on the main practice telephone number – 0131 240 2810.
