Lothian Bipolar Self Help Group

The Lothian Bipolar Group is a self-help group for those affected with Bipolar Disorder including carers, family and friends.

The aim of the group is to provide a comfortable and confidential space for sharing experiences of Bipolar Disorder and to learn new ways of managing the condition. The group facilitators have experience of living with bipolar and the atmosphere is friendly, welcoming and informal.

Meetings take place on the first Thursday of each month, from 7.00pm to 9.00pm, at The Stafford Centre, 103 Broughton Street, Edinburgh. It is free to attend, and there is no need to be referred, just turn up on the night. Friends, family members and carers of those who have bipolar disorder are also welcome

Whilst the main function of the group is mutual support, members also aim to promote wellness and regularly have speakers or group discussions on relevant and interesting topics during the first half of the meeting. The second half of the meeting is spent chatting over coffee, tea & biscuits which are available for a small charge.

There are also some informal social events, such as:

  • local walks
  • coffee meet-ups
  • films at central cinemas

As well as the main group, there is a new group for young people affected by bipolar. The group plans to hold one gathering each month to discuss a topic related to bipolar and provide peer-support to each other.
