Homelessness Services (Edinburgh Council)

All local councils have legal duties towards people who are homeless. This page explains how Edinburgh Council can help and the types of assistance they can offer. Anyone who believes they might be homeless is entitled to make an application for assistance from their local council.

If you have nowhere to stay or are at risk of losing your house, staff can help by going over your housing options. This help may include

  • general housing advice
  • homeless assessment interview
  • temporary accommodation

You can drop in during working hours or make an appointment to speak to someone at any Neighbourhood office or the Housing Options Team, 1a Parliament Square, Edinburgh, EH1 1RF. Tel – 0131 529 7368

For housing, social work and health assistance the Access Point is at 23 Leith Street, Edinburgh EH1 3AT. Tel – 0131 529 7438

Housing Assessment

If you are homeless, or you will be homeless within the next two months, you are entitled to a homeless assessment. Assessments are carried out by Housing Officers, and they will review your circumstances and decide whether you are homeless by legal definition.

You can get an assessment at any of the local offices, or the main office at 1a Parliament Square.

Temporary Accommodation

If you are homeless and need somewhere to live, you can access Temporary Accommodation (TA) at any of the Neighbourhood Offices or at 1a Parliament Square, Edinburgh EH1 1RF.

There are different types of TA available, these include

  • furnished flats

  • supported accommodation

  • Council staffed units

  • bed and breakfast

  • hostels.

Which type of TA you will be offered depends on your circumstances and availability. The service can also store your belongings and kennel your pets if needed.
